Good Shepherd - Week of August 16th, 2026

This summer, we are continuing our sermon series on the parables of Jesus. These short stories are simple enough to remember, but deep enough to unsettle us, challenge us, and reshape the way we see God, ourselves, and the world around us. Together, we'll listen closely to the stories Jesus told and ask what it means to receive his kingdom with open ears, honest hearts, and lives ready to respond. This September, we will begin a new ten-week sermon series through Romans 1-7, exploring the power of the gospel and the grace of God revealed in Jesus Christ. We hope everyone will experience this series in community by joining a small group for these ten weeks. Group sign-ups and additional details will be available in the weeks leading up to the series.

From August 17th-22nd, our Care Pastor, Doug Scholten, will be on his annual prayer retreat in the mountains of Montana. Since the beginning of his ministry, he has taken personal prayer requests from his congregation with him and prayed over each one during this special time.

On Sunday, August 16th, you'll find an index card and envelope in your bulletin. You're invited to write a personal prayer request, seal it in the envelope, and return it at the end of the service. Pastor Doug asks that your request focus on your own need, hope, or desire. Every request will be prayed over during his retreat in Montana's "Big Sky" country.

If you won't be in worship on August 16th, you may email your confidential prayer request to doug@gspc.org. 

Do you have a loved one with mental illness? This group is for you! You will receive encouragement, discover that you are not alone in this challenge, and find new resources to help you cope. Meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 7-8:30pm in the Fireside Room. The next meeting is on August 8/27. Questions? Contact Debbie O'Dell at debodell51@gmail.com.

Those who are mourning the death of a loved one are invited to join the next sessions of GriefShare, a faith-based support group for understanding and healing of the grief process. This series begins on Tuesday, September 15th, from 10-12 noon in the Patio Room, and continues for 13 weeks. For more information call Diana Klimek at 562/896.2505 or visit griefshare.org. 

Help create a clean, welcoming, and nurturing environment for youth in crisis on this day of service, September 12th from 9am to noon, ensuring their space remains safe, comfortable, and well cared for. As a safe, home-like shelter for youth experiencing instability, their shelter requires ongoing attention to maintain the warm, supportive atmosphere they deserve. Beyond the practical impact, this project sends a powerful message to the young people they serve: their community cares about them! Roll up your sleeves and help us give Casa Youth Shelter a Fall Refresh. Serve Los Al will kick off with an assembly at 8:30am at Oak Middle School Outdoor Amphitheatre, 10821 Oak St., Los Alamitos and disperse from there.
