After Thoughts | Richard Wilkinson

This weekend we thought together about Jesus' words in Matthew 6.19-43, including His commandment that we not "treasure up treasures on earth," but instead respond to His gracious invitation to invest in God's Kingdom. Doing so prompted examining a number of passages in the Christian Scriptures, hearing the story of a woman walking down the sidewalk in front of my house, quoting a fictional movie character, engaging the story of a "successful" Hollywood director, and learning from 30 years of research by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, authors of The Spirit Level: Why Greater Equality Makes Societies Stronger.

If you're interested in learning more about Wilkinson and Pickett's thesis, here's a 2011 video from the TED Global conference in Edinburgh, Scotland. Though there are some political implications inherent in his talk, as Christians we seek not to legislate changes through the political process, but instead look forward to the fulfillment of God's Kingdom, which is above all earthly powers and political ideologies! Though our political allegiances may be different than Wilkinson's, his talk provides an interesting perspective on the passage we addressed Sunday - and in under 17 minutes!
