On the Mountain

In this powerful exploration of Luke 9:28-36, we journey to the Mount of Transfiguration where Jesus reveals his divine glory to Peter, James, and John. This miraculous moment, where Moses and Elijah appear alongside Christ in radiant splendor, serves as what we might call a 'teaser trailer' for the resurrection glory to come. The appearance of Moses, the great lawgiver who encountered God on Mount Sinai, and Elijah, the greatest prophet who heard God's gentle whisper on a mountain, is no coincidence. Both had mountaintop experiences with God, received instructions, and then descended to fulfill their missions. Similarly, Jesus doesn't remain on the mountain despite Peter's desire to build shelters and stay in that transcendent moment. The message challenges our natural inclination to manage spiritual experiences rather than simply rest in God's presence. We often want to capture and preserve those mountaintop highs, those powerful camp experiences or worship moments where God feels incredibly near. Yet the Christian life is not meant to be lived perpetually on the mountain. Instead, these glimpses of glory equip us to follow Jesus down into the valley, into the daily grind, toward the cross. The voice from heaven commands us to 'listen to him,' reminding us that true discipleship means faithfully following Christ not just in the spectacular moments, but in the mundane, difficult, and ordinary days that make up most of our lives.
